A lovely morning out on the bike this morning.
Not a lot of wind, pleasant temperature, Autumn riding at its best.
The ride was my latest session in attempting to cram fitness before my surgery on Friday. It is the same reason that I ran last night, completing my first double session day since my accident. I know I will be out of action for a week or so post surgery, so I am just trying to get as much training in now as I can. With sensible reason of course.
Besides the weather, the riding part of this this mornings session went very nicely too. I am still around 10 to 20 watts and around 1.something km/h down on the norm, but if I am honest that is a lot better than I was expecting. Indeed cycling has come back even quicker than I was hoping for, which is really great news. With any luck after surgery on Friday I will be back on the bike again reasonably quickly and able to continue my rebuilding.
It is a pity that running is not going quite as well. The fitness is certainly returning with the running with speed and exertion levels a bit closer to what they should be. All positive signs that everything is moving in the right direction, but it is still a long way from feeling good. In fact the run last night was a real struggle. It was pretty warm yesterday which I am sure didn't help and I probably had a bit of fatigue in the legs from the ride yesterday morning, however I am not sure those are the main causes. I think the simple answer to why running is being tough is that it simply takes time to return. I am also a few kilos over where I need to be which probably doesn't help, but really it is just a lack of running shining through. This will obviously keep improving with time, but for now it doesn't make it easy.
I don't even want to think about what swimming will be like once I get back to that in the next couple of weeks.
One step at a time.
