So I got some results today and I finally am starting to get some clarity on what is going on. Well, kind of clarity anyway. I say kind of clarity because the tests have come back all clear. This means I am good to slowly make my way back into training, but it doesn't give me any idea of what actually was going on in Bintan. That sort of clarity is better than nothing.
Not all that surprised by the 'no result' result. The majority of people that I have spoken to who have experienced similar things also have all clear results to their names. So that was always odds on. The clear result doesn't give me total peace of mind, since the sports world is full of stories of people who were given the all clear and then suffered serious heart failure, but it is a good step forward. I know what I have felt, but the all clear result does let me relax a little.
The result does raise the obvious question of, if there is nothing wrong, what happened in Bintan. To be honest I don't have an answer for that. I am not willing to put it down to a moment of softness, I know what I have been feeling because I have been feeling it for a while. I don't have any doubts about that. I have some suspicions that I might have been carrying a bit of a virus going into the race. I have since got a bit of a cold and all the family has been ill from before I went away. Perhaps that combined with the extreme conditions??? Who knows? I suspect I never will.
So where from here? Well I have a few more medical appointments to do. I still haven't seen a cardiologist and I know my wife certainly won't be happy until the all clear has been given by them (nor will I to be honest). I am also going to get my results reviewed by fellow Swim Smoother Gary Couanis who is a Sports Doctor of some repute at Lifecare in Cottesloe and somebody whose judgement I trust.
On the training front things haven't really stopped (I swam this morning) they have just been turned down a little bit. In that spirit I will be having a slightly easier morning tomorrow, with a couple of hours to do on the trainer and a bit of running on Sunday. If things continue to go smoothly after that then training will slowly build from there.
Fingers crossed that the all clear continues.
