Cold never bothered me anyway...

Yes that is a line from the song in the movie Frozen. Guess who has a 5 year old daughter.

To be honest the song isn't entirely applicable to me, since the cold bothers me quite a bit. In fact I seem to recall complaining about the weather a lot around this time last year.

I think that is something I might start up again soon.

Boy was it cold on the bike this morning. It is commonly said that you don't get cold people, just poorly dressed people and that is true for cycling as much as anything. Certainly when the weather turns nippy the comfort levels can be helped significantly by being dressing appropriately. With that in mind when it comes to cycling, I have a cycling clothing hierarchy. It looks a little like this:

  • 10 to 15 degrees - consider vest or arm warmers (not both)
  • 5 to 10 degrees - arm warmers and vest, consider over shoes
  • 0 to 5 degrees- arm warmers, vest, over shoes, long fingered gloves (plus all other items of clothing that I own).

This morning fell squarely in the 5 to 10 degrees category (about 7), so I headed out with the prescribed arm warmers and vest. I did not regret it for a second. Sometimes once you are out and warm you get a bit warm. Not today. If anything I regretted the lack of over shoes more. Properly chilly, with little pockets of freezing hiding in the hollows.

The ride was good though. I am not sure what it is this time around but I have recovered really well from Busselton. Sometimes in the week after a race you get a bit of fatigue creeping into a session to remind you of your efforts. I had a bit of that in the swim on Tuesday, but nothing today. Felt good (albeit cold) for the whole session. Perhaps I just didn't race hard enough.

The ride itself was just what I was after. Not a flat out smashfest, but not an easy doddle either. Just a nice moderate ride. Enough to get you out and moving, but not leave you gasping. Good to catch up with the Break Your Limits crowd as well and have a post Busso chat.

Despite the cold, this morning was such a magic morning. This time of year really can't be beaten for exercise in Perth, the mornings are just beautiful, light winds, cool temperatures. Perfect for getting out and doing pretty much anything (except perhaps swimming in an unheated river - looking at you Paul Newsome). Once you get yourself out the door and into the cold, you never regret it.

More swimming in the morning followed by a day of not doing a lot since I have the day off work. Actually I tell I lie, I am getting a massage. After that I will be doing not a lot.

Life can be hard sometimes...
