Strange Day

It has been a bit of a strange day today. Late yesterday we got the news that our usual baby sitter for Thursday was ill and so wouldn't be able to look after the kids today. A bit of last minute reorganising has resulted in me working from home today. Nice in theory, but tricky in reality as anyone who has worked from home while looking after two kids can probably attest to. Still it has been a surprisingly fruitful day with some procedures reviewed and a couple of meetings attended (remotely).

Training wise there has been no action so far, but I will be heading out for a run shortly. I had all these grand plans about running this morning and then catching up on Tuesday's ride this afternoon. However, I had a solid day of training yesterday and I am currently unsure how my body is feeling about it. The swim went fine, but after the session on the trainer yesterday afternoon I was feeling a little off. Not much, but not quiet 100%. It leads me to believe that I am not quite as recovered from my cold(?) as I thought. Close, but not quite there. As such I will be sticking with what is on the program, but not going beyond that. There is certainly a school of thought that says that if a session is missed, particularly because of illness, then you let that session go and move on. Trying to 'catch up' beyond a certain point can be a bit counter productive. That is what I am thinking at the moment.

Despite feeling a little bit off last night, the session on the trainer went well. This week has been a funny one training wise. With only three weeks between Mandurah and Phuket, my training schedule has looked a little like this:
  • Recovery Week
  • Training Week
  • Taper Week
With only one solid week of training, it has felt a little like I am just finding my feet again and then I will be tapering. To be honest if at Phuket I haven't made a single gain from the form I had in Mandurah, then I will still be fairly happy. I will be more than content with not going backwards. Doing well in a race like Phuket is less about raw speed and more about stubbornness anyway. Still it would be nice to build on Mandurah rather than running on the spot and so with that in mind I am trying to make the sessions this week count. So I went into the trainer session last night keen to have a solid session. I feel that I got that, pushing the limits a little bit, which I find the trainer perfect for.

In other news, this arrived today:

This is a Huub swimskin. Basically it is something to wear over your tri suit in non wetsuit legal races. I have a few non wetsuit races coming up in the next 12 months or so, starting with Phuket next week, so I thought it was probably time that I grabbed something like this. I haven't tried it yet, but it certainly feels the part. I will give it a go at training in the morning. From everything I have heard, they are speedy. Looking forward to it.
