Despite my concerns yesterday, the ride this morning ended up being quite lovely. Windy, but still pleasant, definitely not raining. That isn't to say we haven't had rain today, it has been absolutely bucketing down this afternoon, so the forecast was more or less correct. But thankfully it was clear this morning.
The ride itself went well. In fact I think it may officially have the highest average speed of any training ride I have ever done. It wasn't something I set out to do, but the ride had two very long, hard efforts in it, which tends to make for a fast ride over all. I was absolutely ruined by the end of it though. Probably not all that surprising. Very reassuring heading into racing season though.
As well as being a good training session, today on the bike I also trialled my race set up a bit. Not so much the wheels etc, I know that they work, but rather bottle positions, spares etc. I have recently rearranged things a little bit, gone for a single bottle at the back and a few other changes. However, I really wanted to try out the setup before race day. So I did that today. All up it seemed to work well, which was welcome news.
This afternoon I made it down to the Saturday Swim Smooth session. It took a bit of effort to get myself down there, since I was already pretty tired. However, I knew that I needed to get a swim in today and I was much more likely to do it with the squad than by myself. Particularly given how the weather has rolled in this afternoon. Actually, we have had so much thunder and lightning this afternoon that I suspect most of the pools are shut now anyway.
The session was a good one. Saturday sessions are typically pretty solid, and can sometimes be downright painful. This one was more down the solid end, rather than the outright agony end of the spectrum, which was fine with me.
A bit of a ride/run session tomorrow. It will be one of the first 'proper' runs I have done in a while, so I am a bit curious to see how it goes. I am hoping for okay. The other factor tomorrow will of course be the weather. The forecast is for more rain. I am kind of hoping that we have a repeat of this morning, but I am not entirely confident about that given what I can currently see out my window. If need be the bike can be done on the trainer, which will work find for this particular session. Will have to wait and see what the morning holds.
