As I mentioned yesterday, I had the day off work today. Not any kind of sickie or anything, just a claiming time off for previous overtime worked sort of deal. Interestingly, having the day off kind of made training harder rather than easier, which is a little counter intuitive.
The reason for training being harder today was that whilst I wasn't going to work, my wife was, which meant I had to be at home instead to look after the kids. So after swimming it was straight home and then this afternoon there was no training since there wasn't really any time for it once she got home. It was a bit of a strange epiphany. There is kind of this assumption that stopping work would make training so much easier, but to be honest I am currently more tired that I would be if I had trained twice and been at work in between. Some food for thought there a little I think.
Speaking of training, as I said, I had swimming this morning. This morning's session was a return to form for the Wednesday morning Swim Smooth set. Two weeks ago the Wednesday session was a bit short (4.2km). Last week it was back to its normal length, but was made up of shortish pieces. Not today though, 5.1km set, with a 1000m effort to finish with. Bam. Welcome back.
Given the above, the session went fine. When a session is that long, you can do it at crawling pace and you will still be shattered by the end. So a big part of doing these sessions well is making sure you pace yourself for the first 3km. If you can do that properly, the session as a whole is usually not that bad. As a lane I think we paced the session well and as such we got through reasonably unscathed. We weren't exactly skipping and dancing our way off the pool deck, but we were able to walk off, which in the context of a Wednesday morning session counts as a win.
Training tomorrow is made up of a walk/run in the morning for which I am hoping the improvements continue. In the afternoon I have a solid little ride session. Whilst I am hoping the session goes well, I am also hoping that the weather we have been having recently also holds for the day. The weather today was absolutely magic, so it would be nice if I could get a little bit of that tomorrow as well.
We shall see.
