Flip flop

I must have changed my mind about the bike session this morning half a dozen times. First I was going to do it on the trainer last night. Then I thought about doing it on the way to work this morning, I briefly considered doing it on the trainer this morning and in the end settled for doing it this morning, but starting and finishing at home. Okay that is only four different ways, but saying I changed my mind a third of a dozen times doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

All the different options had their merits. Well actually doing it on the trainer this morning didn't that would have been just plain crazy (unless it was raining, which it was a little). But the other options had positives and negatives. I ended up choosing to ride and from home this morning because, while it meant I got less sleep, I also got to drive into work this morning with my wife. Sounds like a little thing, but when you have kids, it is amazing how much you get to enjoy 30 minutes of conversation with no interruptions.

The ride itself went fine. Legs are a little bit flat if I am perfectly honest, but that is just the cumulative fatigue talking. It was a couple of hours on the bike with some medium length intervals thrown in. The idea with the intervals was to do them into the wind, but when I first went out there was so little wind that it was hard to tell which direction it was coming from. No big concern, by the second half of the ride the wind had picked up and so I found it no problems. Turns out it was a headwind coming from the direction of my house. Wonderful.

The session tonight is a long walk/run. 2 hours to be precise. As I mentioned yesterday my plan is to try something new with this session, I am going to walk/run home from work. My work is around 20km from home, which should be about right for this session and in theory it should be a fairly pleasant trip along cycleway all the way home. It is one of those sessions which in theory should work pretty well, but I will just have to give it a go to find out for sure.

At 2 hours it is a fairly long session for a walk/run, but for the most part it is quite low intensity. So if you can get your head around the duration it can actually be pretty pleasant. I suspect today would be a bit headwindier than I usually like, but at least the rest of the weather is very pleasant. If nothing else it will be a nice way to rinse some of the work out of my head.

Swimming tomorrow and as I mentioned yesterday we have some time trials. In the end the time trials don't have a lot (or any) repercussions. Paul doesn't really turn around and say "You are too slow, get out of that lane". He sees us train every week and so that probably gives a better idea of our pace than anything. But it is a good consistent way to measure our progress, which is more of the point. Whilst there is no consequences associated with the time trial, everybody in the squad is competitive and so would like to do well. I certainly do. Based on how the swim went yesterday I feel like I have a good performance in me so I would like to be able to produce that. I haven't gone to the extent of tapering of anything for this, that isn't really the point of it, but I will be heading to bed early tonight to give myself every chance I can.
