Coming up trumps

I took a bit of a gamble on training today and it paid off big time. Always nice when that happens. Certainly better than the alternative.

This morning it turned out that the forecast from yesterday had been correct, with varying levels of rain coming through town until after lunch. I wasn't overly keen to go riding in the rain so, as I mentioned last night, I was considering the trainer. However, the forecast also said that it was supposed to clear this afternoon, basically the later in the day you waited the better it was supposed to get. So I decided to roll the dice and wait until this afternoon. In forecast we trust.

By lunch it was still raining pretty solidly and so I was starting to trust the forecast a little bit less and eye off the trainer a little bit more. However, sure enough, by about 1:30pm the rain stopped and by 2:30pm the skies were blue (mostly) and the roads dry. As a result I headed out and had a very pleasant, albeit windy, ride. Win.

To make the afternoon even better, I then had a great run off the bike. I think I might have mentioned yesterday that my run session today was going to be the first real test of my various injuries. 10.5km of proper running. That is about the furthest I have run in a long time. Most of my 'run' sessions for the past three weeks have really been run/walks. I just wasn't sure how both the fitness and the injury would hold. Turns out, pretty well. The run went great. May well have been one of the fastest 10.5km I have done. I have run faster before, but this wasn't far from that. This was after a 60km ride too. So wins all round really.

A little bit sore now, but nothing that I think a good solid stretch tonight won't sort out.

Speaking of the ride, the bike is continuing to just feel plain great. As I said the ride today was 60km and it felt plain easy. It was actually really fun because of it. The efforts were within my limits and so I got to really enjoy being out there spinning along. The legs seem to have recovered from yesterday's ride okay.

Tomorrow I have no training. You read that right NO TRAINING. Not a morning off, not an afternoon off, but the whole day. Earlier I was doing my little "I have no training tomorrow" jig, which really is a lot of fun for the whole family. I am very much looking forward to having as much of a sleep in as my son lets me have and then have a relaxing morning and afternoon. Should be a grand day.
