Good news

A little bit of good news today I think.

Firstly I got into the physio today. It turns out that it pays to be facebook friends with your physio.

Secondly, the pain in my back is hopefully not the end of the world. It isn't nothing, and I am very glad that I went to the physio, but it shouldn't be anything to slow me down too much.

So what is it? In short, a strained facet joint, which are the knobbly bits that run down the sides of your spine. I know them well, I have strained a few in the past, but usually on the other side. The strained facet joint was causing irritation to a ligament running through my hip, which was really inflamed, and that has been causing me pain.

Facet joints have this annoying habit of getting pretty caught up, and when they do, they can be hard to release. It the past I have not had any luck doing it with self massage, I suspect it is the sort of thing you that you need to have somebody else (who knows what they are doing) do for you.

Lee-Anne the physio was able to release the facet joint and relieve some of the swelling in the ligament, however, that will need a bit of help by way of ice and anti inflammatories to completely come good. The ligament is pretty sore at the moment, but it has just had somebody poking it with sharp pins, which is bound to make anyone a bit grumpy.

Hopefully now that the facet joint is free, the irritation to the ligament also goes away. Fingers crossed. As it is I have the go ahead to keep training, which is very good.

Once again I am reminded that when it comes to these things, it is often better to get it seen to sooner rather than later. Rather than hanging around waiting for it to sort itself out.

Jumping on the trainer for a spin tonight. I have been assured that it should be okay, however, I might keep the power limits on the Kickr a bit lower today so give my back/hip a chance to recover from the needling. It is supposed to be just a spin after all. I will see how it feels once I actually get to jumping on the bike though.

Being on the trainer tonight means that this morning I got a loverly sleep in. It was particularly grand, since our son slept as well. For the first time in a long time I woke up by myself, rather than by alarm or by offspring. Good way to start the week.

Riding tomorrow morning. It is a session that really calls for the road, since it involves hill repeats. The forecast is currently for questionable weather in the morning, but I think it will probably be okay, before turning nasty in the afternoon. The session could technically be done on the trainer, since the Kickr is capable of simulating hills, but it just wouldn't be the same. So at the moment the plan is to be on the bike unless the weather turns nasty sooner than expected. Hopefully the back is feeling a bit better too.
