Little by little

Hmmm, late and tired. This could be a short one.

Good day of training today. Almost forgot about my back at times. The morning started off with a nice ride. Short and windy, but still quite pleasant, Perth autumn cycling at its best.

The ride this morning was followed up by a swim at Claremont with SwimSmooth. Good session, one of those open water skills sessions that makes the Saturday SwimSmooth session so useful. It was pretty tough, but in a satisfying kind of way. The sort of session you feel happy to have completed.

Back on the bike in the morning for a kind of brick session. I say kind of brick because I will be walking off the bike rather than running off the bike. Still better than nothing.

The walk will in fact be a repeat of what I tried on Thursday, so there I will try some running. See how it goes. My back has continued to feel increasingly better over the last couple of days, so I am hopeful of getting the 5th piece completed this time around.

I had a physio appointment yesterday and it was goodish news. We where able to pinpoint that most of the pain I have been getting is actually due to stiffness in my lower, lower back. The bit below the lumbar region, whatever that is called. I was explaining to Lee Anne the super physio that on my walk on Thursday most of my pain had been through my glute and hip. She said that that is usually associated with stiffness in the lower part of the back. What I coincidence I said, because when my back has been sore, that is where I have been feeling it. Sure enough that area was pretty stiff. If this is all correct then it is good news for a couple of reasons. One if gives us an area to focus our attention on and two, it isn't the disc, my bulging discs were L4 and L5. In fact Lee Anne actually gave me permission to push it a bit more on the run, because I can be confident that I am probably not doing myself harm. The level of pain that I pulled myself up for on Thursday was probably about the right point. I am apparently okay to push the pain a bit, but once it starts to affect my form, time to stop. So I will give it another go tomorrow and see how it goes.

Fingers crossed.
