It was a return to a bit of an old favourite this morning, long running intervals. I haven't really done these since the lead up to Mandurah 70.3, so it has been a little while.
The long intervals session is made up of running a number of 3km intervals, fast. Actually, being 3km long I suspect that the intervals are really too long to be called that, but I have never come up with a better name, so long intervals they remain. Anyway, it is a pretty tough session, but nothing I have done has been better at giving me the confidence to run quickly for a sustained period. Because of that I know that the benefit of the session outweighs the pain of it. That is why I refer to it as a bit of an old favourite.
The session went well. As expected the pieces were tough, but I was happy with the speed and I managed to keep them pretty consistent as well.
The only downside to the session is that I am unfortunately not feeling 100% at the moment. I always seem to manage this, picking something up two weeks out from a race. True to form I seem to have managed it again. At the moment the cold has manifested itself in my chest. I am feeling mostly okay except that I feel like I am constantly having a minor asthma attack, with all the fun symptoms that go with that, such as shortness of breath and coughing. Once again this cold has definitely come through the kids, with both of them still suffering from similar symptoms. It is always hard when it comes through the family, because no matter how careful you are with hygiene, you just aren't going to dodge that bullet. Oh well. At the moment it is just my chest, although this afternoon I have started to feel a bit head coldy as well, so I will see how that develops.
This morning the chest wasn't bad enough to stop the session, but it was definitely bad enough to effect it. On the bright side I am happy with how the session went given I wasn't at 100%. I am not sure I will be so lucky in the next few days though unfortunately. Based on how I am feeling right this second, I suspect I will be having some rest sessions in the next couple of days. Fingers crossed this passes quickly and quietly.
At least I have the afternoon off today so that will hopefully give me a chance to rest up a bit.
