Hump Day

Thursday. The day that I have begun to regard as the toughest one of the week. Not my highest volume day, Wednesday or Saturday have that honour, in fact on paper it doesn't seem that bad. So why so tough? It all comes down to the run.

Thursday morning I repeat the long interval run session that I do on Tuesday morning. Just the one run, not like Tuesday where I back it up with a second run. It is not any longer, usually it is slower, but despite all that it is still the toughest day. By the time I get to Thursday morning I am carrying the cumulative fatigue of half a week of training. I reckon I feel all of it on Thursday morning. Usually about half way through the session I think to myself, 'two more intervals and then I will be done and I will have broken the back of this week of training'. After Thursday morning, despite the fact that I know I have some tough long sessions coming up on the weekend, I feel like I have started downhill. For me Thursday, not Wednesday is hump day.

That is behind me now. Hooray.

I had my follow up session with the Running Centre today. Some people may remember that two weeks ago I had my initial session with the physio there, looking at my running technique etc. To my surprise I found out that I don't run as badly as I thought I did. I got lots of good strength exercises and advice. Today was a follow up to that. Today confirmed that the strength work I have been doing is going well, which is always reassuring. Still more work to do, but it is a good start. I also got given some dynamic strength exercises, running drills essentially. I am pretty keen to get into them, since I have never done that sort of thing before. Being from a swimming background, I understand the importance of strength and technique drills and have always been keen to do the same for running. Now I have the opportunity. Unfortunately you look like a complete fool doing some of them, but that is the price you pay for improvement sometimes.

It might call from some very early morning sessions though, just to try and practice before there are to many people out and about.
