Well I successfully got out on the bike this morning. It was great. Its greatness was due to a couple of reasons. Firstly it was lovely being back out on Darwin roads. Secondly, I successfully didn't reduce my coach's bike to a 7kg pile of carbon and aluminium. I call that a success.
It was a bit of a relief to see that my plan for getting training done up here in Darwin looks like it will probably work. I am still not sure if I am going to be able to get every single session done, or whether every session will be exactly what is written on the program, but after this morning I know I will be able to do enough to make these five days up in Darwin not a complete a washout. That is a big relief.
This morning I got to take a spin over some of my favourite Darwin roads, East Point, Dickward Drive and the Nightcliff foreshore. I had forgotten that if you are early enough in the morning riding in Darwin can be sort of like your own private criterium. The roads are so quiet sometimes you forget they weren't built just for you.
The weather was pretty nice as well. Darwin has certainly started to warm up from the lovely weather you get in the middle of the Dry Season, but it isn't into full blown tropical build up horribleness yet. This morning was one of those mornings where it was pleasant with a breeze that had a touch of coolness to it. Very pleasant. Sweaty, but pleasant.
Tomorrow morning it is back on the bike for a bit more of a serious ride, so hopefully that goes as well as this morning. It will certainly mean an early morning, but I think it should work out okay. Tomorrow night I am going to try and get down to the pool for a swim, but I shall have to see how that goes. I will have to play that one by ear.
One step at a time.
